The painting of a portrait takes several months. The process begins with you and I simply talking about what and who will be painted, preferably at the location of the painting.
Once we’ve agreed on what the portrait will entail, I return with a photographer. We take several hundred photographs between us. From these hundreds of photos the composition is created; I often reference as many as 60 separate shots.
Assume two to four hours of shooting in your home, however the subjects typically need to be present for less than an hour; the rest of the time is taken up photographing details. Sometimes a short, supplemental photoshoot is needed to gather additional details.
At this point, I work on a series of studies. Approval stages, if requested, include figure selections, a preliminary sketch of the composition, and a subsequent large-scale drawing.
Once the large-scale composition is completed, several weeks of mixing colors are needed before I start the final portrait.
